The Science of Chess Project

The Science of Chess project is an ambitious path forward for chess players and coaches to take full advantage of the opportunities of the digital age. In collaboration with chess grandmasters & scientists, the Science of Chess Project aims at producing the best chess text book ever. Based on thousands of scientific studies, ranging from neuroscience, mathematics, artificial intelligence, cognition, nutrition, psychology or game theory, it will help to improve the game of beginners as well as of chess world-champions. Ultimately, it will not be just another of thousands of chess books, instead it will be THE standard textbook for all aspiring chess players, the first evidence-based chess book.

What is it?

How?
The main author is a renowned scientist and will be supported by professional chess grandmasters around the world as well as chess engine enthusiasts and computer scientists. The book will accumulate the scientific knowledge of over 10.000 scientific publications. In addition, there are several projects and experiments where interested readers can participate.

The Goal?
It is the author’s goal to simply produce the best chess book ever written. I strive to deliver the best learning experience, based on scientific fact, that is currently possible. This book will NOT be delivered in a dry textbook style that would cure any serious case of insomnia. I strive to incorporate:
– the best quality lessons
– the best quality illustrations
– novel, so far unseen historical documents & photos
– evidence based scientific fact
– computer-assisted analyses
– actionable advice suited for self-study and chess trainers
– the best game annotations ever
– the best usability for beginners and grandmasters alike
– interactive, so the reader can repeat experiments and replay games

Content
The book will cover the following topics:
– Aging and Chess
– Nutrition, Diet & Drugs
– Chess Psychology
– The Chess players Brain
– Creativity and Chess
– Gender Differences
– Learning Chess
– Mathematics of Chess
– Computer Chess
– References
– And much more..

Scholastic chess?
One of the main purposes of this textbook is to teach millions of young and old chess players. To achieve this, it is intended to provide the resulting chess book – for free – to those who are not able to afford a textbook. This means I will try to make the textbook available to chess schools in developing countries and to regular schools that have chess in their curriculum.

We are still looking for some missing chess-related publications. Maybe you can help us finding them.
